Urgent message Take Note!!
As of noon on Thursday, December 18, 2025, all Polk County Snowmobile Trails will be CLOSED. The Gandy Dancer State Trail will also be CLOSED to Frozen Ground ATV/UTV
Lake running and lake crossing are run at your own risk.
I would like to remind everyone. This is early season riding, the ground is not froze under the snow.In fact, the snow that we got is more of a sugar snow and will not stay in place causing trails to deteriorate fast.
Groomers have been and will be out packing and rolling trails.Swamps are not froze. We request snowmobiles, get out and pack the swamps, as wide as possible.
We need everyone's help and cooperation to do this.
This will help get our swamps and wetland areas froze up!
This is causing our groomers to do a lot of extra running around and causing areas not to get groomed or packed .
So get out, enjoy while it lasts
Message from the President of the Polk County Snowmobile & ATV Council
Polk County Snowmobile trails cannot open before Dec 15th 2025.
This is to minimize conflict with deer hunting.
Before Snowmobile Trails can open these tasks must be accomplished:
1.     Trails must be adequately brushed.
2.     Trails must be properly signed.
3.     There must be sufficient snow.
4.     Where possible, Trails will be packed by groomers to help establish a base.
Polk County Snowmobile Clubs are working to have trails cleared of any remaining storm debris and prepared for opening on December 15th.
If you are a Snowmobiler and want trails open, it's time for you to step up and help your local club.
For many years these tasks have been completed by the same small group of faithful volunteers. That group is shrinking and continuing to age. Trails don’t mark and groom themselves.
Trail Opening could be delayed if our Clubs don’t get some more volunteers.
This is your opportunity to play a small part in building and maintaining the best trail system in Snow Country!
Please visit our Polk County Snowmobile and ATV Council website to find out more information and contact a club.
Thank You.

 Trail report
Polk County snowmobile trails remain closed!
Looks like we received approximately 5 inches in southern polk county between the last two storms.
North of hyw 8 received a little more but polk county trials will remain CLOSED!
We are off to a good start this year with snow on the ground in late November But we will still need to wait for all deer hunting season to close which is around December 15th.
Prior to the snow events no lakes or ponds nor was the ground frozen either .
This little bit of snow will insulate the ground and will play a major factor in getting the ground,Lakes, ponds or the swamps frozen and will again play a major factor in getting trails open. our next Council meeting is December 11th Ill have more info after that meeting i wil try to have the this site updated by noon on the 12th
New maps are coming out this year . so wait to request maps if you have already you may receive old maps if so you will have to request one again as your info is not stored nor do we automaticlly send with No requests
Use our automated form to request a new map be sent to you.p
There's been a few changes in trails, especially the forty six trail from balsam lake to the country dam.
I'll have more information and updates after the next december.Polk county snowmobile council meeting
