Winter / Summer atv utv trail report and usage

Well it's Dec 18th

The Gandy Dancer State Trail will also be CLOSED to Frozen Ground ATV/UTV use.



The Gandy Dancer is now Closed for ATV utv use. Due to rain and warm temperatures




Keep checking back for updates as the status of this trail could change pending weather conditions and snow conditions.


The cattail and saw mill is open for atv utv use packing and rolling


Trail Notice: Cattail , Sawmill and Sterling loop are open .


Message from the President of the Polk County Snowmobile & ATV Council

Polk County Snowmobile trails cannot open before Dec 15th 2025.

This is to minimize conflict with deer hunting.

Before Snowmobile Trails can open these tasks must be accomplished:

1.      Trails must be adequately brushed.

2.      Trails must be properly signed.

3.      There must be sufficient snow.

4.      Where possible, Trails will be packed by groomers to help establish a base.

Polk County Snowmobile Clubs are working to have trails cleared of any remaining storm debris and prepared for opening on December 15th.

If you are  a  Snowmobiler and want  trails  open,  it's  time  for  you to  step up and  help  your  local  club.

For many years these tasks have been completed by the same small group of faithful volunteers. That group is shrinking and continuing to age. Trails don’t mark and groom themselves.

Trail Opening could be delayed if our Clubs don’t get some more volunteers.

This is your opportunity to play a small part in building and maintaining the best trail system in Snow Country!

We Stopped at the Barrel house for lunch. Highly recommend this stop.

When it comes time to opening the Gandy Dancer trail for Atv/ UTV use . Key date range is dec (15 -18th) then

There are several factors that need to be considered.

(Such as) the gun deer hunting season the extended antlerless hunt muzzleloading which normally is not over untill mid December.

Weather temperature and or the ground is frozen and both Polk County and Burnet County need to meet and agree to open the Gandy Dancer in both countries.

*The Stower Seven Lakes Trail between Amery And Nye will continue to be closed for ATV/UTV use.

Gandy Dancer in Polk County is only Open to ATV/UTV winter use only when the frozen ground rule applies when theses conditions are

  1. When the temperatures are below and remains below freezing.

  2. And Polk & Burrnett County agree to open the entire trial for Atv/UTV usage.

  3. All hunting seasons are over.
